Chapter 4: Numeric and geometric patterns

4.1 Introduction

The pattern in the number of seeds at the centre of a sunflower follows a special sequence: \(1; 2; 3; 5; 8; 13; 21; 34; 55; 89; 144\). This is called the Fibonacci sequence. Notice that each number in the sequence is the sum of the previous two numbers.

In this chapter, you will work with patterns. Patterns allow us to make predictions. You will learn to create, recognise, describe, extend and make generalisations about numeric and geometric patterns. You will also work with different representations of patterns, such as diagrams and tables.
